Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) Technique to Map Potential Aquifers of the Guigou Plain (Middle Atlas, Morocco): Hydrogeological Implications

Vertical electrical sounding (VES) as a geoelectrical method has proven its effectiveness throughout the history of groundwater geophysical investigation. In this sense, VES was carried out 47 in study area with aim determining geometry and limits Quaternary basaltic aquifer formations and, above all, location discontinuities located north Morocco, between center Almis Guigou city Timahdite. This is experiencing an overexploitation due to excessive pumping development intensive agriculture activities, resulting continuous decrease piezometric levels. The processing diagrams by WINSEV software showed presence electrically resistant surface level, attributed formations, age, whose thicknesses reach at least 150 m SW area. level superimposed on moderately conductive horizon which, according local geology, corresponds Pliocene marl limestone alternations. correlation interpretation models allowed us elaborate thematic maps sections which illustrate vertical lateral extension reservoir well thickness, decreases general from south-west north-east; however, main also correspond faults fractures, they show NE–SW direction sub-parallel major accidents Middle Atlas. A prospectivity map generated, coinciding regional fault lines confirmed alignment very good flowing water boreholes. shed light opened avenues draw further conclusions physical hydrodynamic characteristics, optimize future siting exploitation boreholes through elaboration map.
